Halloween Costume Ideas for the Budget Minded
Article by Harvey J. Sharp
Halloween is one of those North American holidays that most cultures feel comfortable participating in. It doesn’t hold any particular cultural values, such as Christmas, Easter or Hanukah. It’s the one time of year that everyone can pretend to be someone else, whether it’s a comical character or a superhero. Your inner child is released and you can share the event with your kids or alongside friends at a party. The only problem with Halloween is that costumes can be expensive and for one night a year, you probably don’t want to break the bank. Fortunately, there are a number of costume options that you can have fun with and not feel like you overspent on the day.
Paper Bag Princess – The paper bag princess costume is a Robert Munch inspired costume. Borrowing from the popular story about a spoiled little girl, the story is about her transformation from dress wearing brat to paper bag regular girl. The simplicity of this costume is that all you need is a paper bag and to punch holes for your legs and arms to fit through. You can also wear some light clothing underneath so you are not completely naked.
Cloud – Before you pfft at this costume, consider that you can have lots of fun with this idea. A cloud can easily be made by gluing cotton balls all over a plain white shirt that you can pick up from the dollar store. Since there are different types of clouds, you may decide to add different elements for effect. For example, for a storm cloud you could cut out a lightning shape and color it yellow or glue some fake rain drops to the costume. Its easy, it’ll take a night to make and who cares if it gets destroyed, it was inexpensive to put together.
Waldo – Yes, that popular “where’s waldo” story collection was an instant classic with kids and adults. Relive some of the former magic by dressing up as him for one night and hide yourself around the party, so that others can find you. All you need for this costume is a red and white striped shirt, some blue jeans and a knit hat with a red pom pom on the end. It’s a fun costume to show up to a party with and all the items can be bought a thrift or dollar store for almost nothing. Also don’t forget to include some glasses, although you don’t have to choose the exact model of glasses that he used.Final Thoughts – A costume can be anything you want it to be, you just have to have some creative ingenuity and usually a few hours to put together. You can even do group theme costumes on a budget, like the seven dwarfs, which is fun, easy and gets everyone into the spirit.
